Gluten free sourdough? Yes it’s possible!
Here I’ll write down step by step instructions on how to make your own sourdough starter so you can begin a fun gluten free sourdough journey, because let me tell ya, once you start you won’t want to stop!
Instructions
Step 1
- Pick your gluten free flour, I like to use white rice flour and sorghum flour the best, I rotate between them.
Step 2
- Gather your supplies needed; mason jar with screw lid, coffee filter, and your chosen flour and water
Step 3
- Add equal amounts of flour and water to mason jar and mix.
- Example; 2 Tbsp flour & 2 Tbsp water or 1/2 cup flour & 1/2 cup water
Step 4
- Put coffee filter on jar and secure with the screw lid
Step 5
- Let sit on the counter to begin the process of fermentation
Step 6
- Discard 1/2 of your mixture before feeding it
- Feed (add your equal amounts of flour & water to mixture) twice a day for 7-14 days until it starts to bubble up between feeds
Step 7
- Once it starts to bubble you can now use your starter in recipes
NOTE: It will take your starter longer to come alive the colder the temperature is where it’s sitting
DISCARD NOTE: If you don’t like wasting like (I hate wasting), you can use the discard in other recipes like the ones found on my blog

Maintaining the Starter
Once your starter is alive and active you can feed it once a day.
If you don’t plan on using it constantly you can put it in the fridge with a sealed lid and feed it once a week, this is usually what I do. Before i go to use it I pull it out 24 hrs before making any sourdough and feed it so it’s nice and active.
When it is really hot and humid I tend to rotate between jars and I put my starter in a clean jar every so often to prevent the formation of mold in the jars.

I hope this little sourdough starter tutorial has helped you create your own gluten free sourdough starter!
Happy sourdough making!
